On 6th September, 1915, 8th  King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 41 Brigade, 14th Division went into the trenches in the north-east of the Ypres salient in the Haymarket sector near Wieltje. Conditions were awful. It had been raining a lot and the trenches were knee deep in mud but here they stayed, one company at a time in front whilst the others toiled away constructing dug-outs, until they were relieved on 21st September. On 11th September, 1915, Rifleman Jolly was was killed when he was hit in the head by a sniper’s bullet whilst in these trenches. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records Rifleman Jolly’s age as being 15.
